Reflections of... Family!

"The boy wanted ice cream! What's a guy to do?"

Reflections Of…Family!

                           by Alan P. Scaglione

I’m probably going to sound pretty old right about now.
Our grandson Jett, who I know you have heard a lot about in the last two years of writing this column…
Is starting VPK tomorrow—our baby boy is going to school!
He is so excited to go—hope we can keep that excitement going for another 12 years! LOL!
We had a little “Going to School” Party for him—
Which amounted to—Christmas in August!
I know, I know “That Nana buys Jett too much stuff—I have counseled her on many occasions, but…What’s a guy to do?”
Those who know us get the laughter in that comment—you see, it’s the boy’s Nano who always seems to buy him too much!
Hey? He’s my son’s son! What’s a guy to do?
So we are having dinner and Jett keeps looking over at the two bags of gifts we have brought.
The one bag is full of clothes—he’s not interested in that bag.
It’s the other bag—with the “toys!”
I always bring him something.
And apparently, he knows that.
I know that for two reasons.
1 – his parents tell me that Jett always screams “Nano is coming and he is bringing me a present!”
And …
2 – he called me on the phone yesterday and said “Nano, this is Jett. You coming over? You bringing me presents?”

Yes to both questions!
Again, what’s a guy to do?
So we went through the clothes—his parents were appreciative and excited; Jett was not!
But when we got to the “other” bag—now that was a different story! He was grinning ear to ear!
He loves puzzles; and he can read how many pieces are in the puzzles.
I also got him one of those “Connect Four” games. We played with it and I taught him how to play. He loved winning!
So I let him win!
What’s a guy to do?
I watched over at the couch where my son was holding his 5 month old sweet pea little girl Cali Harper!
She was all smiles and making cooing noises for her daddy—he was grinning ear to ear!
And I thought—I remember his first day of kindergarten!
I never missed a single first day of school—I had that job where I was able to schedule time off so I could take them.
And it meant so much to me to be there—to watch them grow—a picture taken of them each year—compared to the last year’s picture.
And he commented that he took time off work to be there for Jett’s First Day—a Circle of Life kind of thing.
Now my son was taking his son to school—and I got a little nostalgic.
You see—no matter how old he gets—that’s MY little boy—and now he has HIS little boy.
And I know someday, I may not be around to see it, but…HE will watch HIS little boy with HIS little boy!
And it made me feel old.
And wish for at least another 20 years so I could see the next generation take their little boy to school!
The Word says…
“I was young and now am old…but, I’ve never seen the righteous forsaken or His seed out begging for bread!” Psalm 37:25
You see, God has been good to me—let me see my children grow up and now have children, raising them to know the Lord!
Now that’s the Circle of Life I am most proud of—my children were raised to love God and they are raising theirs the same way!
Praise the Lord!
Afterward, Jett wanted Nano to take him to get ice cream.
What’s a guy to do?
You can tell—I did it!
