Really?
I had a customer today…
Her name was IKEA!Yes… IKEA….
YES… the store!
I had to ask “Did your mom name you after the store?”
She replied “I guess so—she told me she liked swiss things!”
I asked her if she had ever been to an IKEA store.
She said “I’m 24 and I have never been—seems weird to go to a store I was named after!"
Really?
Seriously!
I know, I know…
It’s the age old one true parental right that each person gets…
Naming their child!
And there is always a reason for picking the name!
I always ask the question.
I am amazed by the people who do not know WHY they are called Target or PierOne or CircleK!
I jest but…
I really don’t!
I have heard all of the car names from Porsche to Mercedes to Lexus to Rambler.
Yep—Rambler!
The guy said his parents told him he was conceived in a … you guessed it- Rambler!
I even had a girl who pronounced her name “usenahvee”
That’s how she pronounced it…
It was spelled USNAVY!
Yep—her mom loved the navy boys!
And believe me…
I have had to tell my son…
Whose name is Schuyler…pronounced skyler!
To blame it on his mom—she picked out his welsh name meaning “scholarly or wise”
And he has hated it his whole life!
He has also had to pronounce it and spell it twice his whole life too!
I remember hearing him try to explain how difficult it was growing up with a “different” name to his sister and brother-in-law…
They had simple names like Mark and Amanda…
But they wanted to name their child Mykai…pronounced mick-kye!
My son explained that it is such a pain, coming from someone who lived the pain each and every day!
They didn’t listen…and Mykai has had to pronounce and spell his name twice for 8 years now!
It’s every parent’s right…
But it’s every child’s right…
To find out why?
So I am challenging you today—if your parent is still alive—ask them!
“Why did you name me Alan?”
I did…and I found out how brave my mother was!
She broke with family tradition.
I was supposed to be named after her father.
But… her favorite actor was a guy named Alan Ladd, and…
When it came time to name me—she stepped up to the plate and said…
“I want to name him Alan!”
Against my father’s wishes, in opposition to tradition…
Back in 1960—that was pretty daring for a mother in an Italian family!
I have always been proud of my mom for daring to do what she wanted to do—no matter what!
I don’t like my name, but I DO like that my mom dared to be different!
So…
Your homework is… find out why they named you your name!
There may just be a good story there!
Don’t be one of those people who just throws their hands in their air and goes “hmmm? I don’t know!”
We can’t all be Richard, John or James; or Jennifer, Jessica or Ashley…
Some of us have to be “Porcelain!”
Yes—true!
Her mother loved the way it looked!
Hmmm? Aren’t toilets made out of porcelain?
A rose by any other name would smell?? How’s that go?
