“Communication is key!”
Ever hear that?
Ever notice?
No one communicates anymore!
They text; they email; they tweet!
But communicate?
Nah—that takes dialog, which is an interaction between two or more for the purpose of sharing a thought or conveying a message.
And believe me—these days—no one carries on a dialog!

Points2Ponder  Why don’t people talk anymore? Like we used to! When we weren’t so techno savvy that we programmed conversation out of our daily life!

I talk for a living—a hundred calls a day, an average of 4 minutes or less a call, listening to people ask about their insurance—mostly “Where’s my check?”
But… sometimes, they just want to be heard and know—someone’s listening!
I get a lot of “Thank you—you really listened to me—most people don’t! You are unique!”
And I wonder… why?
It’s because no one listens anymore!
For example—
We have six kids, six grandkids, 3 in-laws—none of them listen to a single voicemail we leave for them.
My wife and I will take the time to leave a nice voicemail, sharing a moment, reminiscing about something or… asking for input.
We get a callback with “You called?”
“Did you listen to our message?”
“No—I never listen to messages—takes too long—I saw that you called—what did you want?”
And… exasperated—I usually say “Go listen to my message and call me back!”
But honestly—they won’t listen to the message—so, I end up repeating myself… for a second time!
Try engaging someone in conversation.
“What do you think about the drastic weather changes we have been experiencing lately?”
If they are 35 or older, they may share something they saw on the news recently.
Under 35? They shrug their shoulders and go “I don’t know!”
And that’s the end of that conversation.
Remember when?
We just talked to each other!
My daughter would warn any of her friends she brought home from college “My father likes to have conversation—to get to know you—to discuss deep subjects!”
They didn’t believe her.
Then they came to visit—and our first evening was spent talking about politics or religion or music or the meaning of life—usually, talking about all of it on one night!
And they looked at her and said “does your family always communicate this much?”
And she would say “Every time we get together—we talk!”
I didn’t realize just how odd that was to so many until I started to notice—no one shares a thought, communicates a question or ponders a point—nope—they just text!
And how much conversation can you really have when it always ends with a SEND!
Think about someone you have lost recently…
Is what you miss most about them – the way they texted?
No—you miss their voice, their words, their thoughts, their laughter!
All of it because—you exchanged ideas, you shared thoughts, you pondered possibilities!
And I will NOT accept that NO One does that anymore!
How about you?
When’s the last time you turned off the TV or Internet and just looked into your loved one’s eyes and said “Let’s Talk!”
And just talked about the past, the present, the future!
Someday—you will wish you had—I have had too many people in my life leave this world suddenly…
And I for one… wish we could talk one more time!
Oh for one more day—not to get their text, tweet or email, but…
Oh for one more day—to hear their voice and just share a conversation!
It’s the lost art of our society… like the cursive writing they are abolishing in schools—yes, they are--- not to teach cursive writing to children.
Soon—they will direct you to a chat room designed specifically for your family so you can ask “What did you do today!”
You get my message—communication is the key—to someone remembering that you existed!
TEXT LESS—TALK MORE!
