                    "Where were you when?"

There are times in all of our lives that are indelibly etched in our minds.
No matter how old we get, we can immediately transport ourselves back to that moment in history that will forever be remembered.
Every generation has one…that day when we ask…

Points2Ponder  Where were you when?
For my mother’s generation, it had to be…
Where were you when you heard that President Kennedy had been shot?
Friday is the 50th anniversary of that fateful day in Dallas, Texas.
Many of us know the history of that day, and some of us still battle with the unanswered questions that still loom out there—never to be answered.
Did he act alone?
Was this a conspiracy plot?
Were the CIA and FBI involved?
And the questions go on and on…
But for me…
I remember that day through my mother’s eyes.
I was 3 years old, and all I remember is my mother crying all day—and I didn’t know why.
Most of you do not know that my hometown Tampa, Florida was one of the last towns that the President visited before he was shot.
Yes—he visited Tampa on November 18th—just 4 days prior to his assassination.
Tampa had a big parade for him—and I didn’t know this until my brother Paul told me, but…
Our mother Rose was ecstatic on the 18th because—President Kennedy drove by her place where she made mops…
And she got to see him through the window!
Not even—she met him and shook his hand.
Not even – she got to stand by the street as he drove by.
Nope—she still had to work, but she could see him driving by from their window.
And that, my brother told me, made her so excited to “meet” the President!
What a strange coincidence that the day she passed away was on November 18th—33 years later!
And Paul confirmed… our mother cried from the moment she heard about it—all day long!
See? I do remember that day!
Even IF I was only 3 years old!
So…for our “over 50” baby-boomer age group—where were YOU when President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was shot?
It’s one of those moments that you always remember!
And the senses and feeling and emotions all come rushing back—as if it were yesterday!
Kennedy was a hero to so many!
He was young, he was catholic, he was from the American Royalty family “The Kennedys”, and he was full of revolutionary ideas!
He garnered the enthusiasm of that generation much like Obama has garnered the enthusiasm of this generation.
My mother was enthralled with JFK—
Even after his death, she kept track of his wife Jackie and his children Caroline and “John John”, as she always called him—through the pages of Photoplay magazine!
That was her guilty pleasure—every Friday night, she would read her Photoplay to see what was going on in the world of Hollywood—it was a precursor to People!
And she always worried about John John.
Many of us have etched in our minds the picture of little John John saluting his father’s coffin!
Just a moment that solidified the emotions of our nation!
Our Nation understood that our leader had been gunned down—and it was our responsibility to care for his family—and we did!
Different generations may have different iconic moments that define them and connect them together.
David Gregory, moderator of Meet the Press, said that his generation will always feel that way about 911! Where were you when?
No matter what the event, depending on the generation—we all become One Nation frozen in time as we reminisce…
And answer the question…
Where were you when?
