Reflections Of… God!

You just never know…
Who’s watching…And listening?
I work in a Call Center—40 hours a week, I get to listen to the woes and misfortunes of people who just want to get paid.
I am an insurance guy—and it comes down to one basic thing—where’s my money?
I often say “It’s just about paying a bill—you get your money so you can go pay someone else—it’s just that simple!”
But I always try to give my customers the respect and dignity I would want.
Many of them are dealing with One Unexpected Event that has changed their lives, sometimes temporarily, sometimes… permanently.
I’m in disability insurance: I get delivery calls, and I get stage 4 cancer calls.
Sometimes, I smile over the names they chose for their child.
Sometimes, I cry over the misfortune their life has been dealt.
But I always try to remember “it could be me on the other end of this call someday!”
I was having a pretty rough week at work—it happens.
I try to shake it off and never let the customers suffer just because I’m going through something.
I took a call from a customer named Cynthia.
She was having some trouble with her doctor providing us with the medical paperwork we require.
She was frustrated with the doctor, with her employer, with our company.
I went the extra mile and helped as much as I could.
She suddenly, abruptly asked me the most curious question.
She said, “Are you a minister?”
Hmmm? Where’d that come from?
I’ve been asked “Are you a believer?” Even “Are you a Christian?” but…never, “are you a minister?”
I replied “Yes ma’am, I am!”
You have to know—I am bold about my faith—you doves, and you have warriors. I’ve definitely more warrior than dove.
She said “I could tell. From the first moment you spoke, I saw a bright light and heard a boldness and felt a love coming through!”
I was shocked. I was taken aback.
She continued “I bet you don’t even know when people are watching you and seeing if you live what you preach?”
I replied “Ma’am, I am consistent—wherever I am, I am bold for Christ, respectful of others but never apologetic for my beliefs!”
She said “And I could tell that, just the way you spoke. Don’t ever stop living for Christ—don’t ever stop being the you He made you to be!”
WOW! Didn’t know I was going to be getting a message that I NEEDED today.
I thanked her and ended the call, and I saw for a minute and thought “Wow…guess they really are listening!”
And the scripture came into my mind that I was taught by my pastor Charles Strickland.
Matthew 5:14 “Ye are the light of the world- A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid!”
And I have always, my whole life, tried to be that beacon of light in a dark world.
I’ve always tried to be available and approachable—and real!
I laugh, I cry, I’m a man who loves his wife and is not afraid to show her and others how much I do;
I’m a father who is not afraid to be an example to his kids and grandkids of a bold Christian man.
And I struggle with “Are they even watching? Are they listening? Do I even make a difference in their lives?”
And then God sends a stranger my way and…reminds me that YES someone is listening and YES I am making a difference in someone’s life.
It just might not be the someones I was hoping to make a difference in.
But I let my light so shine…for HIM… everywhere!
