Reflections of... Family!

"There it is--the Miracle! When two become one!"

           Reflections Of… Family!

                                                            by Alan P. Scaglione

Ever have a moment happen…that is so perfect…
you just want to stand still…slow motion…
take it all in…feel the moment…
and remember it forever!
That’s how I felt this past Saturday night!
While performing the wedding ceremony for my godson and his bride!
We have been planning this wedding for a year—it seems longer!
And, after all of the “did you forget this? Did you remember that?” conversations…
And the emails back and forth…
And the texts between us…
And the phone conferences “just to make sure we have everything covered”…
There we were!
All of us… assembled under a beautiful sunlit Saturday afternoon—the weather called for 50% chance of rain—guess someone else got our 50%!
I look around…for a moment… and I thought “this is as good as life gets!”
A man, A woman, A family, A moment in time!
And I knew—I was so blessed to be a part of this!
As I started the ceremony with the perfunctory “ALL RISE!” and the bride appeared at the back door…
I watched my godson…rough and tumble, tough as nails, “all Man” man… crying at the sight of his lady love.
And I had to hold back the tears—I was the guy performing the ceremony—but, in that moment—I was just so proud to be his godfather!
We spoke, we laughed, we cried, we advised, we preached—maybe a little—and then…
The couple spoke—and they brought the message—of hope, of love, of adoration, of complete trust in someone else.
And we all just took in the moment—and knew—for such a time as this—we were witnesses to not just a earthly contract…
But more importantly, we were witnesses to a heavenly covenant!
I charged the couple with the following:
“I cannot tell you if it was God’s will for you to get married, but…
I can tell you that it IS God’s will for you to stay married!”
And finally, the words I had waited to say for over a year…
“As a minister of the gospel and most importantly, HIS GODFATHER… it is my distinct honor to introduce for the VERY first time…
Mr. and Mrs. Shane Alan Wood!”  I announced their name like we were at a WWE wrestling match!! And crowd cheered, clapped, hollered!
It was priceless!!
I had used the scripture “For this reason shall a man leave his mother, and a woman leave her home, and the two shall become one!” Ephesians 5.
But to see it happen—right before your eyes—the meshing of two bodies into one—two hearts that now beat as one—such a sweet sense of God!
He really did ordain marriage!
Then came the reception—It was just a family reunion—with one side of the family meeting the other side of the family—some, for the first time.
Then came the dancing—yes—I said dancing!
The bride danced with her father—and all eyes teared up as the song said “She was my little girl first!”
And my godson got my forever friend Sandy out on the floor to dance to “Forever Young” with his four daughters! Priceless!
And I thought about how this all happened—just two years ago—I didn’t know where my friend Sandy or my godson Shane Alan were…
But…through God and my sweet wife using Facebook—we found them—and God brought us all back together!
So thankful for God using whatever HE chooses to use for HIS plan to unfold!

As we started to leave… I gathered the new couple together and said “Shane, you remember the first time we met? You told me that you had been married once, had been hurt once and would not EVER do that again. I said “okay, but if you ever change your mind…I do weddings! And you said… that’ll never happen!”

He smiled… kissed me on the cheek and said “We could not have done this without you! I love you, godfather!”

And then… I cried!
