I'm Just Sayin

May we Never Forget!

There are moments in our lives that are forever frozen in time.

For my generation, it was the day Kennedy was shot…I was three and only remember my mother crying all day.

 Or maybe…

The day the Challenger burst into the sky while we watched, horrified, stunned, in disbelief.

Moments like that just remind us… no matter what…sometimes, bad things happen.

But I think the one event that we can all identify with, and ask the question “Where were you when?”

Will be remembered this Tuesday… it’s on a Tuesday again, just like eleven years ago.

The day our country was attacked and lives were lost, heroes were made and our nation learned a lesson together—

We are not exempt from bad happening to us on our soil.

Can you remember where you were?

I know exactly where I was…

My best friend in life, Ellen Bullard, was 41 at the time, and she had just been diagnosed with stomach cancer.

My lovely wife was gracious enough to allow me to take this time to be with my friend.

She had just started her first round of chemo treatments, and I had just picked her up to take her to her treatment.

I remember saying, “Hey Bud, did you hear that some plane hit the Twin Towers? Can you believe that?”

We thought at the time that it was just a random “Oh My Gosh” with some piper plane losing their way and accidentally crashing into one of the towers.

We arrived at her doctor’s office and walked in to a small crowd gathered around a TV, all eyes glued to the screen.

I said, “Did they find out how a little plane ended up hitting the World Trade Center?”

As soon as I said it… we watched as the second plane hit the second tower!

We looked at each other and said, “This is no accident—and that was NOT a little plane! We are being attacked!”

We all know how it unfolded—the bravery of Flight 93 in Pennsylvania, and seeing the pictures of planes grounded for three days!

But… the thing I remember the most is something you won’t ever hear or see again…

The bodies jumping out of the windows… and that “thump of hitting…”

It haunted me for years—it really did!

I remember that day, taking Ellen home, sitting with her for a while and then she said, “Bud, go check on the kids—they need their Papa!”

I didn’t want to leave her, but we didn’t know how many more planes were out there, and I needed to know my kids were okay.

I found them with their mom, all at home; all watching this on TV.

I was shocked; I was horrified; I was scared; but I was so relieved that they were okay.

And eleven years later—we still have a moment of silence at 8:46am and 9:03am – remembering the fallen, remembering the moment that changed us forever.

And through all of that…I am reminded of the children of Israel, in the book of Joshua 4:1-9.

After God had caused the Jordan River to dry up so they could cross(this is the second time—yes, He did this miracle twice!)

He instructs them to select a stone from the River, each tribe, to remind them always that God was with them that day!

And they used those Stones of Remembrance to make an altar to Jehovah and to always remind and teach their children what God did for them that day!

It wasn’t the priests who were charged with teaching this, it was the fathers!

May we always teach our young ones how God spared our nation from utter destruction—and remember those who lost their lives that day!

May we never forget and always remember “where were you on September 11th, 2001?”

I know I will teach Jett and his little brother about 9/11!

Our Stone of Remembrance that God protected America on that day!

 Until Next Time
