Reflections Of…
Fathers and Sons!

For
those of us who have sons…they seem to be our little boy forever.
But
there comes a moment when… they transform from boy to man. There’s just a look that comes over them that suddenly, you see this man standing in front of you.
Maybe it’s when they become fathers?
Sometimes… but sometimes, it takes a little longer… but when it happens, you see your son in a whole new light!
My son is a great father to his son Jett and his 4 month old “sweet pea” (his name for her) princess Cali.
He is leaving for an extending business trip today… new promotion, new career advancement, new financial increase.
He’s a good family man!
We spent the evening with him and the kids, and I was telling Jett “while Daddy’s gone, you are the man of the house!”
Jett ran up to his Daddy and said “Am I the man of the house?”
My son looked at me and then looked at Jett and said, “yes son, while I am gone, you are the man of the house! You have to take care of mommy and sissy!”
We both laughed a little.
You see, I used to have to do some travelling for business.
And every time I would start packing for my business trip, my son would come into the room to watch me pack.
And each time, even though he is the youngest child, and his twin sisters are almost 3 years older, I would look at him and say…
“While I am gone, you are the man of the house, and you will take care of your mommy and your sisters!”
And he would get this big smile and run into the living room to announce that he was the man of the house while Papa(that’s me!) was gone!
So… for us, it was a little bit of legacy being passed on, from father to son.
It just made me realize—he is now passing on some of our traditions to his children.
And Jett beamed with that sense of importance too!
Some of what we teach them… they pass on to their children.
It’s what the Word teaches us to do with our children.
Proverbs 1:8 “My son, hear the instructions of your father!”
But there has to be instructions given… to be heard!
We talk about what’s wrong with the youth in America, but I think it comes down to that scripture.
We have to have some fathers who are “sticking around, stepping up and showing how” for their sons to learn from them!
Not enough fathers are sticking around to give instructions for life so the son has sage wisdom to help him become a man!
It takes a village to raise a child—we’ve all heard that!
But…it takes a father to raise a son!
It doesn’t necessarily have to be a biological father—I know some great step-fathers, uncles and just good hearted men who have stepped in, but…
We men have to raise our sons to become men!
And that’s when you see that face—of your little boy—transforming into—a grown man!
At the end of the night, after we had made a fort out of gigantic legos—there was a moment—that made you glad you were there to see it.
My son was walking away, after he and Jett had finished the fort.
And Jett just said to himself something that I knew my son had not heard.
I called him back and asked Jett to repeat what he had said.
Jett said, in that sweet sound of an innocent little 4 year old boy “I’m going to miss you, Daddy!”
And my son was caught up in the moment, picked his son up into his arms and whispered in his ear…
“I’m going to miss you too, son!”
And there it was—another generation of….Father and Son!
