A day when… those “Still in Love” make those “not still in love” or “not involved with someone” want to throw up!
Believe me—I know this!
Why do I know this? Because I have spent my life in Corporate America and it is the single most “Man Hater” Day of the Year!
The only ones hated more than the men? The women who receive the flowers and the chocolates and the balloons!
I know because… I hear the ladies talking at the water cooler about the ladies who did NOT deserve those flowers or candy or balloons!
Yeh—it’s pretty fierce!
And if you are a man—a happy married man—whose wife embarrasses you by sending something to the office for You?? Watch out!
You have become Public Enemy #1… times 2!
Points2Ponder When’s the last time you surprised your
Special Someone with an “over the top, too good to be true, leaves you
speechless” Valentine’s Day Present?
I have been THAT guy more than once—I finally
had to clue my wife in—I get too much grief when I am THAT guy!
And what did she do the next year? She sent something
again!! Just to prove a point—“He’s taken
Ladies—and I have a good one!” Her words—I promise! But… I have to tell you… all the “haters” would “love” to be hated! Just once—to be the girl who got the flowers, the box of chocolates AND the balloons!
So… I have a challenge for you “guys” out there!
You still have time—IT’s TOMORROW you Neanderthal!! Just get in line…because TONIGHT-- all the guys will be at Walgreen’s or Walmart or Hallmark Cards!
But for those of you who are “creativity challenged” –
Welcome to Alan’s sure fire 100% guaranteed (say that like you’re from New Orleans) way to get “appreciated” tonight!
And it won’t cost a thing!
Okay…maybe the price of printing, construction paper, pipe cleaners and a $2 vase!
Welcome to Alan’s Makeshift Charm School!
See that picture?
That’s a picture of my wife Bella’s FAVORITE Valentine’s Day present I EVER SENT HER!
And Bella has been wined and dined—gifts galore—diamonds, dinners, desserts—all of it—nothing too good or too expensive for my Bella!
But the one thing she still has up in her office—
And displays for all to ask “Who made that?” and she replies every time “My sweet husband made that for Valentine’s!”
And I made it myself!
And it cost under $5 for the whole thing—Sorry honey, remember how much you like it, okay???
There was a 19 month stretch when I didn’t work—I had taken the time off to take care of my best friend Ellen, who succumbed to stomach cancer.
My lovely wife agreed that I needed to be there for Ellen… so we had some lean months when entertainment was a deck of cards or whatever was on TV.
But neither of us would have traded that time with Ellen for anything money could have bought us! Priceless!
So… Valentine’s rolled around, and the guy who always bought his girl a piece of jewelry and flowers and chocolates and balloons and the perfect card?
Well, he was proverbially FLAT BROKE!
So… I had to be creative! I had to improvise! I had to let my love for my Bella lead to a gift that she would never throw out!
And so… I made her a bouquet of Paper Roses! YES—Paper Roses!!!
Anybody remember the Marie Osmond Song? You remember---
“Paper Roses , Paper Roses oh how beautiful they seem to be…But they’re only imitation, like your imitation love for me! “
Well??
Can you see what MY Paper Roses say?
“Sometimes, Paper Roses do mean He cares!”
And I dressed up and delivered them to her office… with just my poor boy version of Prince Charming!
And she cried!
She won’t admit it now-- but I was there!
And to prove it… it’s the ONLY present she still displays at work, in her office, with pride!
And it cost me a whopping $5 !!!!
So… Take a Hint and pull out the ol’ craft corner because…
It’s NOT the money you spend…It’s the TIME and EFFORT you expend – that makes all the difference in the world!
Happy Valentine’s Day Bella!
Always, Only You!
Oh yeh—better only do that once—after that, it just looks cheap!
We’re spending the week in Savannah this year!
