The Guest of Honor at my Surprise Birthday Party!

When’s the last time you had….a perfect day!
When all the stars align; when pennies from Heaven appear; when you see that double rainbow!
You get the drift—a day that starts out great and ends even greater!
Just one of those days when… you thank God that you’re alive!
Points2Ponder  When’s the last time something happened that was better than the way you hoped and imagined—When was your last SURPRISE?
I’m a planner… I always say, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail—and I never plan to fail!”
Everyone laughs—then my family looks at them and says, “No, seriously—he’s not kidding!”
I just rarely leave something up to chance. If I can control the outcome, if I can sway it in my favor—that’s what I am going to do.
One of my signature sayings is “Make a Memory that will last a lifetime!”
Why? Because… if you MAKE the memory, the chances of disappointment with the outcome are far less than if you just LET the memory MAKE itself!
So… you can understand how hard it was for me for my birthday—to just let go—and let whatever happened happen—just go with the flow!
I am not by nature a “go with the flow” kinda guy!
Not apologizing for who I am—I accept and appreciate my Type “A” personality—but I also recognize that—not everyone shares the same appreciation!
But this year—I was not going to “make the memory”… I was going to let others make it for me!
And my wife Bella and sister-in-law Kay where cooking up something, and I didn’t want to know a single detail!
I love SURPRISES! I don’t snoop! I don’t follow behind and check for clues! I don’t even interrogate unsuspecting targets in the path who know information!
NOPE! I really don’t! I just enjoy the fun of being surprised!
My wife only told me that we had some place to be at 11am. I was ready to go.
She drove—of course!
She got lost—she drove past the restaurant I thought we were going to—now I was really stumped.
We got to a restaurant we have frequented a million times in our “family” history.
They have the “best” onion rings in the world!
I thought—okay—guess we are going to have some “rings” for lunch.
We walk in, turn a corner, walk down a hall, and… SURPRISE!!
My family is there—for my birthday!
My grandson JettJett runs up and says, “Nano! It’s your Happy Birthday Party!”
I have to tell you—I was floored—I did NOT see this coming! I honestly had no idea!
And I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the Surprise!
Jett made everyone move so he could sit next to His Nano!
And there we were, family gathered without my insistence or manipulation; my family gathered just to honor me on my birthday!
I cannot remember the last time a surprise was this perfect!
They threw one for me for my 50th Birthday… and that was spectacular—down to the horse driven carriage ride with all of my family aboard!
That was great—but this moment—maybe because of where I am in my life—my heart is healed—no chest pains to deal with—my life is good—
What I cannot change, I am learning to accept and handover to the only one who can…
I realized-- for the first time in a long time… that man in the mirror-- is just happy to be alive!
And there’s no surprise in that!
