Points2Ponder When’s the last time you almost missed a
call—just to have it change your day—for the good!
My wife and I were on our way to do some
Christmas shopping this past Sunday afternoon.
We had our list made out—having just taken
inventory of what was still needed. She said, “We will go into The Christmas Tree Shop and can get most of what we need there!”
That sounded good to me—could get back to watch some football.
I am blessed to have a wife who loves a Sunday afternoon watching some football—she really does!
So I don’t have to persuade her to watch the game with me or have to deal with the “when’s the game gonna be over?” questions!
Nope, she loved our football Sundays as much as I did.
One quick stop here-- and home we go!
Phone rings as we are walking in.
You have to know… these new fangled phones, with their touchtone bells and whistles…
They just don’t do well with my Fred Flintstone fingers!
I have to swish the screen to answer the call.
I usually cannot get the phone to recognize my “swish” in time to get the call.
That’s what was happening now.
I swished and swished; the phone rang and rang—I was not connecting with this call.
And all of a sudden, on the last ring, the “swish” swished and… “Hello!”
It was my son.
You have to know—he is of this new generation
who does not leave voicemail.
If you didn’t answer, he would just think you
weren’t available and… go on and do something else.Remember that comment!
“Hey Pops, where are you?”
I told him we were walking into this store to
do some Christmas shopping. He responded, “That’s funny because we are about 2 miles from there… how do you get there?”
How do you get there?
My son lives a hundred miles away… but today, at this moment, he was leaving a birthday party in the city where I live and…
He was about to head home but… thought he would call to see if we were available.
Remember…he would NOT have left a voicemail. He WOULD have just headed home.
But instead… he and his wife Kim and my grandson Jett joined us at the store.
And then, they went to lunch with us.
And then, Jett, my articulate and brilliant 3 year old grandson( I know, I know… everyone’s grandchild is brilliant at 3 years old)…
Jett says to his Dad “Can we go to Nano and Nana’s house for Just One Minute? Pleeeeeezzzzeee!”
I love how this kid knows exactly what to say… to steal my heart!
I knew they had to get back on the road… they had an hour’s drive ahead.
Maybe next time.
Instead, my son said, “Just for one minute? Okay…but only for one minute!”
Jett jumped in my arms and said to me “We’re going to Nano’s house!”
And they came…
And I took Jett out to feed the ducks and the fish in our pond.
And he played with my toys—remember that I love remote control cars—Jett does also!
And he played on my treadmill—yes, I have one—doesn’t get near the use it should, but I have one!
And he kept trying to get into Nano’s Santa Shop—this kid knew- at three years old—there were presents in there!
But… he never did get in!
We sat on the couch- my son, his son… and me.
I told Jett “here are three generations of Scaglione men!”He didn’t get it—but someday—he will!
And 90 “one minute” ‘s later… it was finally
time to go home.
Jett hugs me and tells me “I love you Nano. Glad we came over for one
minute!”I told him I was glad, too!
They drive off.
And I think, “Man I am so glad my swisher worked today!”
Look what I would have missed!
