I owe this all to my buddy Andy Purvis, fellow author, who has written a series of sports centered books—his “Greatness” Series!
Check them out—good stuff for that sports guy in your life—I gave out two this year!
And that’s the end of Andy’s PSA!
His birthday is Christmas Eve!
I had bought a card, but I didn’t want to send it when I sent our Christmas cards, and I didn’t want to send it too soon OR too late.
I kept asking my wife “Should we send it now?” she replied, “no later than Monday, December 17th!” Duly noted.
So, it was Monday, my first day of vacation week—and Andy’s card was on my To-Do List!
I needed a stamp—just one, not a book, just a single stamp to mail my friend’s birthday card. How hard would that be?
Apparently, harder than I knew!
I went to the first post office, and the line was outside the door. I had planned to just buy a stamp from those stamp machines in the Post Office.
Not at this office! They had a sign saying I had to see the front desk! For a single stamp? I was not having it!
Did I mention that I am a classic “Type – A” personality?
You probably already guessed that by now, huh?
Points2Ponder When’s the last time you were the recipient
of something you do so often—but rarely receive!
So… I remembered my second post office. I was
on my way in a New York Minute!I get there… and the line is twice as long.
But that’s okay because… I know I can use the stamp machine.
Except—that same sign was at this post office—it was a conspiracy!
They wanted me to waste 30 minutes of my life standing in their line to purchase one ticket for my friend Andy’s birthday card.
I was incensed!
You have to know, I can become a bit verbal when I sense a moral or social injustice is being done—I need to right a wrong—to declare a misdeed!
So declaring is what I started!
“I can’t believe that they would stop you from buying stamps from the stamp machine JUST SO you had to stand in this line—for a single stamp!”
I went on to say, “This is why so many people are using UPS these days—and they just asked for another penny raise on the stamp—this is what’s wrong with America!”
I felt that I was doing my public service by declaring the injustice I was experiencing!
I was being wronged—all while I was trying to do the right thing!
UNTIL I felt the tug!
The tug on my heart? Nah—the tug on my shirt.
It was a little old Spanish lady who said in broken English “I give you a stamp!” as she was peeling it off her roll.
WOW!
All I could think was… What a Random Act of Kindness(RAK)!
Something I do every day but… no one ever seems to do for me!
And here it was! My single stamp, peeled off and ready for Andy’s envelope!
I thanked her profusely. She smiled like “it’s no big deal, it’s just a stamp!”
But…it was a Big Deal for me!
I told everyone what she had just done and that “This little lady is what is RIGHT with America—Random Acts of Kindness will change our NATION!”
No one was listening but… they weren’t listening to my previous tirade either…
Well… apparently someone was!
I suddenly felt the joy that comes from being the “recipient” of a RAK! And it made my day!
I went to the bakery next—I had to reward myself with a cookie—just one, but I wanted to celebrate my RAK!
One cookie cost a buck seventy-five! Really? One cookie?
Needless to say, I walked out without a cookie!
As I got in my truck, I see this guy just hoping for a hand out.
I looked at him and said, “you are worth more than a cookie! Here you are!”
And I handed him my cash, probably about $5—but better than a cookie!
Guess I got to feel the Joy in Receiving AND Giving—The RAK Revolution really is a Circle of Love!
Spread the Love!

Guess Who?? Alan, you crack me up. What a pal and an excellent writer. I love reading your thoughts. Thanks for your friendship and kind words. The moral of your story about the stamp is that the spirit of giving not only makes the receiver feel good but it makes the giver feel even better. Your act of kindness toward me was repaid by the giving of a stamp from a complete stranger which inturn placed you in a postion to pass your blessing on to another complete stranger, but also a child of God. I believe we are all capable of greatness and you just proved it. How can we not believe in Santa? Merry Christmas! Andy
