“I’m Just Sayin’”
by Alan P. Scaglione
Random Acts of Kindness. I have been doing them for most of my life.
Just little things that can make someone’s day.
My godsons Shane and Chris and I even started a RAK Revolution!
We challenge each other to do as many in a day as possible.
All based on the thought that we can all be a little nicer to people we meet, in little ways.
It’s as simple as opening a door or noticing someone’s new hair cut.
Can also be as cool as paying for the next guy’s toll fee while at the toll booth.
That’s one -- Shane and Jessica, his fiancée, has done a few times. Cool!
I try to do RAKs at work, with colleagues and customers.
For a colleague, it may just be remembering their birthday or just asking how their weekend was—
And LISTENING TO THEIR RESPONSE!
Yeh—that’s important—you have to be “present” in the moment—not “just passing thru!”
Kindness can make a difference in someone’s life.
I wrote a song once called “What’s it Cost, What’s it Pay?”
It was talking about a compliment.
What’s it really cost to pay someone a sincere compliment?
What’s it really pay when you are the recipient of that compliment?
For some people… the payoff is finding a reason to keep living. Seriously.
So… I really try to apply this to my daily life….and spread the RAK Revolution!
I was doing just that today…
On the phone with a customer…
An old lady, with a southern drawl.
She was upset that something she had requested had not been done.
Oh so she thought. It involved something being mailed out.
I sensed her frustration and her feeling that “Corporate America is out to get me!”
I thought it would be a good moment to “go the extra mile—do something nice—be kind!”
So I told her, “Ma’am, I will personally mail this out for you- I will make sure that it gets in the mail today—I promise!”
I wanted her to know that I was taking responsibility to get this done right for her. I even said, “My name is Alan. I’ll take care of it for you!”
Random Act of Kindness done.
Made her day! I felt a sense of joy at helping turn a bad situation around.
RAK Revolution spreads!
She thanked me for helping. Her last words were “You are so kind Alan to go that extra mile, for me!”
I let her know that it was my pleasure.
As I ended the call, when she thought we had hung up…
I hear “My name is Alan. I will personally take care of this for you. I promise. I promise my A***!”
This old lady had just mocked me…with a southern drawl to boot! And then, cussed me out!
I just sat there. Stunned. Amazed. Baffled.
Then came… Insulted. Disrespected. Angered. Betrayed.
I thought, as my kids would say “oh no she ditten?” But-- yes, she did!
This old lady, who sounded like a frustrated sweet Sunday school teacher… had just shocked me.
And I asked myself “Why did I bother? Why should I even send this letter out? Why should I keep my promise?”
But immediately, my mind went to the passage in the scripture… in Matthew 18:21-22
The one that talks about how many times must we forgive when someone does us wrong?
And I heard the words “Seventy times Seven!”
Seventy time Seven?
God was reminding me that… we keep doing what we do, not for our reward for doing it, but… because “IT’s the RIGHT THING TO DO!”
And…
the right thing to do was… send out that letter.
And
I did!Every time we do something kind-- like keep a promise…
RAK
Revolution spreads across the world-via mail!
Until Next TimeI’m Just Sayin’…
